  • Purpose
    • Describe roles, responsibilities and chain in a ORG, aligned with organizational goals
  • Description
    • Define the scope and how an ORG or an unit is structured, formal relationships, roles and interfaces
  • Elements
    1. Organizational Purpose and Structure
      • Functions – Grouping people based on their skills or areas of expertise, standard of work, cost management easier and reduces duplication of work
      • Markets – Focus on customers, market, sector, tends to develop inconsistencies and duplicate work
      • Matrix – Different managers in functional areas and products, service or groups
    2. Roles
      • Specific set of skills, knowledge and responsibilities
    3. Interfaces
      • Work packages, with REQ quality standard, formal or informal
    4. Org Charts
      • Chart, featuring:
        • ORG units – teams, departments, divisions
        • Reporting lines – Continuous (direct authority) x Dashed (temporary situation or transfer of information)
        • Roles and people
  • Usage Considerations
    • Advantages – Almost all the ORG have it
    • Disadvantages – The organizational redesign may be controversial, the existence of informal lines of authority and communication are not reflected
